MARITIME ELECTRONICS DEPARTMENT - FISHING VESSELS - MARITIME VHF RADIOS

If your VHF radio is equipped with DSC, the only thing you must do to start continuous and repeated transmission of a distress signal on a dedicated VHF Channel 70 is to press the [DISTRESS] button. The message will include the vessel's ID, position, time of the first call and distress type (if selected by the operator at the time of the first call). If any other GMDSS - compliant ship listening to VHF DSC Ch 70 passes nearby, your distress call will automatically be received and relayed to other stations on VHF as well as by all other available means of communication. Your call will be repeated by other vessels until received and confirmed by Marine Rescue Coordination Centre.
