MARITIME ELECTRONICS DEPARTMENT - YACHTS - MARITIME VHF RADIOS
If your VHF radio is equipped with DSC, the only thing you must do to start continuous and repeated transmission of a distress signal on a dedicated VHF Channel 70 is to press the [DISTRESS] button. The message will include the vessel's ID, position, time of the first call and distress type (if selected by the operator at the time of the first call). If any other GMDSS - compliant ship listening to VHF DSC Ch 70 passes nearby, your distress call will automatically be received and relayed to other stations on VHF as well as by all other available means of communication. Your call will be repeated by other vessels until received and confirmed by Marine Rescue Coordination Centre.
NAVICOM RT-450DSC VHF radio
With press of a single "distress" button the DSC system sends the distress message that may be received by other vessels equipped with VHF DSC radios (continuous automatic watch is mandatory on certain ships) within 30 - 50 nautical miles. The message from the vessel in distress will be automatically relayed from ship to ship until received by a rescue centre.
Apart from the above safety features, the Navicom RT-450 DSC radio enables traditional communications with selected ship, group of ships or land station. Owing to DSC such communication may be fully confidential.
